How to Find Backlink Opportunities Without Paying for Ahrefs or Semrush

Paid SEO tools like Ahrefs and Semrush are genuinely useful once you have a budget for them, but they're not a requirement to start building backlinks. Most of what those tools do for prospecting — finding relevant sites, checking who accepts guest posts, spotting forums and resource pages — can be done manually with the right search techniques.

Start with search operators, not guesswork

Google search operators let you filter results down to exactly the kind of page you're looking for. Instead of searching your keyword alone, combine it with phrases site owners commonly use when they're open to outside contributions: "write for us", "guest post guidelines", "submit a guest post", or inurl:forum for community discussions.

The trick is running several of these variations for your niche rather than just one. A single search rarely surfaces everything — different site owners phrase their guest post pages differently, so casting a wider net of query variations catches more of them.

Not all backlink types are worth the same effort

It's tempting to treat every backlink opportunity the same way, but they're not equal. A well-placed guest post on a relevant blog tends to carry more weight than a listing in a generic business directory. Forums and Q&A sites are often lower effort but also lower value — useful for visibility and referral traffic, less so for direct ranking impact.

Before reaching out to anyone, it helps to know roughly what tier of effort a category deserves. Spending the same energy chasing a directory listing as you would a guest post on an established blog is usually a poor trade.

Qualify a prospect before you pitch

A page showing up in search doesn't automatically make it worth pursuing. Before reaching out, check whether the site is still active (recent posts, working comments), whether it looks legitimate rather than spammy, and whether your topic would genuinely fit their existing content. A five-minute check here saves a lot of wasted outreach emails later.

Where this gets faster

Running search-operator variations and mentally sorting categories by value is exactly what Nexlink's Backlink Opportunity Finder and Search Footprint Generator automate — both are free to use.
